Duties & Responsibilities

Successful candidates will work in a diverse range of practice areas common to higher education institutions, such as student life and academics, compliance, labor and employment, governance, transactional, public procurement, public records, privacy, civil rights, intellectual property, research, accreditation, risk management, law enforcement, real estate, public finance, litigation strategy and oversight, administrative law, threat assessment and student health and safety, hearings, policy and procedure development, information technology, legislative, and constitutional matters.

Duties and Responsibilities

Advise and represent University administrators on matters that may include student life and academics, compliance, labor and employment, governance, transactional, public procurement, public records, privacy, civil rights, intellectual property, research, accreditation, risk management, law enforcement, real estate, public finance, litigation strategy and oversight, administrative law, threat assessment and student health and safety, hearings, policy and procedure development, information technology, legislative, and constitutional matters

Work closely with other attorneys and the talented support team in the Office of the General Counsel, as well as University administrators, faculty, and staff, and interact with outside counsel, other governmental offices, University-affiliated organizations, and the Arizona Board of Regents

Develop and foster strong relationships with University clients and outside counsel to support strong partnerships with the Office of the General Counsel

Assist in developing and providing training and educational programs for administrators, faculty, staff, and other University colleagues

Contribute to the collaborative planning and execution of the University of Arizona strategic priorities

Represent the University of Arizona locally and nationally (as needed). Responsibilities will involve travel within the state of Arizona and may involve travel outside the state

Engage in continuous education and improvement in legal practice and knowledge through professional development. Attend and participate as a presenter at conferences and workshops as appropriate and as requested

Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor

Minimum Qualifications
  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Admitted to practice law in the State of Arizona, in good standing, or be eligible and admitted to practice law in the State of Arizona within one year of employment
  • A minimum of three years of substantial and progressively responsible legal experience practicing law
Preferred Qualifications
  • Five years of substantial and progressively responsible legal experience practicing law
  • Experience providing legal service and counsel to research institutions, colleges, or universities or practicing law in a higher education environment
  • Experience and knowledge of Arizona laws, rules, and regulations, including public procurement, public records, and public employment in Arizona
  • Experience in or with and knowledge of state or federal governmental and regulatory environments
