HDR is hiring a Substation Project Manager/Team Leader to join our growing and nationally ranked team of Power Delivery professionals in Arizona.

Primary Responsibilities

As part of a well-established Power Delivery practice in Arizona, the Team Lead will have the opportunity to build and lead their own team of Substation design professionals while managing Substation projects in Arizona and beyond.

This individual will be expected to manage all aspects of substation engineering projects of all sizes and complexity, including scope and/or proposal development, project team development and assignment, project execution, project closeout, quality control, scheduling, and budget management. Duties also include supervising and growing a local team of engineers and technicians to support projects, and engaging in business development activities to support existing and new clients in the region.

As a Substation Project Manager/Team Lead your role will encompass the following:

  • Managing and leading substation projects throughout the entire project life cycle, including scope and/or proposal development, project team development and assignment, project execution, project closeout, quality control, schedule, and budget management.
  • Working independently and/or directing, mentoring, training, and/or supervising one or more Project Engineers, EITs, Designers, CADD Technicians and administrative staff.
  • Leading the QA/QC process on projects per HDR's Quality Management Systems (QMS) requirements with a commitment to delivering world class quality.
  • At times, being responsible for overseeing non-engineering components of projects, including public involvement, environmental permitting, right of way acquisition, construction management, and other services.
  • Building, developing and supervising a local substation team and providing oversight over workload, quality, utilization, team morale, training, and performing annual performance reviews of team members.
  • Leveraging existing staff across the company to execute work and deliver world class services to clients in the AZ/NM region.
  • Performing client management, project management, staff supervision, and/or technical support activities.
  • Coordinating with HDR's Talent Acquisition team and leadership to develop a hiring plan to help build and grow a group of substation professionals.
  • At times, supporting and engaging in broader business development activities with existing and target clients in the region.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field required
  • Minimum of 5 years of substation design experience required
  • Strong client and project management skills are required
  • Demonstrable leadership and communication skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office
  • Some travel may be required

Preferred Qualifications

  • PE license strongly preferred
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or ability to obtain it within 6 months, together with experience using project management tools, such as MSProject, a plus.
  • Ability to effectively understand and apply many of the following project management concepts is strongly preferred: project life cycle, contract terms and project risk, work breakdown structures, project scope/schedule/budget, project initiation, project planning, financial management and controls, including earned value, internal/external communication, team management, change management, and project closeout
  • Track record of working cooperatively with diverse teams; regional, department, and technical managers; and project staff preferred.
  • Experience with transmission, distribution, communication, and system protection and planning projects, as well as public involvement, environmental permitting, and real estate acquisition considered a plus.
  • Experience working with Renewables developers and/or the interconnection of Renewables a plus.
