Position Highlights

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Arizona (UA) invites candidates to apply for a career-track faculty position at the Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice (PoP) Rank across all areas of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) for a start date of Fall 2024. The ECE Department is ranked in the top 20 percent of public universities in the nation and is in a rapid expansion phase. As a key driver for this expansion in 2023, a new CSE program was launched and the department is engaged in an ambitious, multi-year hiring effort over the next 5 years. The ECE Department seeks to attract, develop, and retain excellent faculty members with outstanding teaching credentials and future promise. The department is especially interested in candidates who will contribute to the growth of the CSE program, diversity and excellence of the University's academic community through their teaching and service. We seek a candidate who can demonstrate outstanding teaching methods as well as the ability to develop and teach undergraduate courses in a variety of formats (e.g., on campus, online, interactive video) consistent with the department and college's purpose, vision, and value. We seek to hire candidates with a strong background in CSE, whose teaching experience covers one or more of the undergraduate level courses on Introductory Level Programming, Discrete Structures and Basic Algorithms, Data Management, Operating Systems, and Design and Theory of Computation.
Appointment will be made in the ECE department and candidates should express the relevant experience in their cover letter.

This career-track appointment is not eligible for tenure.

Professors of practice may be appointed for a period of more than one academic or fiscal year, but not more than three academic or fiscal years, as set forth in Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) Policy 6-201(C). Such appointments may be renewed for subsequent periods. A POP faculty is a voting member of the faculty and is eligible for full benefits.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Maintain a workload typical for a career track faculty within the College of Engineering (CoE) defined as 80% related to teaching and 20% related to service.
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses using a variety of formats, including on campus, online, and interactive video platforms.
  • Engage students in active learning, encouraging class participation, and provide support in completing class assignments / projects.
  • Manage classroom interactions and establish and maintain a climate that encourages learning across multiple delivery platforms.
  • Contribute to the service responsibilities of the CoE and the University of Arizona, in part through participation on committees and student mentoring, including those from underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Contribute to CoE and the University of Arizona's development through appropriate outreach to local communities (including government units, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and area residents).
  • Assist in the development of innovative approaches to enhancing student engagement, increasing diversity, and expanding collaborations with community and business partners.
  • Participate in advising and mentoring students.
  • Maintain regular in-person and virtual office hours and/or be available to students by appointment.
  • Participate in funded programs that extend the CoE, University's and discipline's knowledge or capabilities regarding the teaching and learning in their content areas.
  • Advise student research and serve as members of Ph.D., M.S., or undergraduate research committees, as permitted by the Graduate College.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. degree at the time of hire in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Will be asked to provide education credentials during the offer discussions.
  • No experience beyond the Ph.D. is required for Appointment at Assistant Rank.
  • Four years of experience beyond the Ph.D. are required for Appointment at the Associate Rank.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional experience in innovative teaching methods, specifically in distance modalities.
  • Professional experience in undergraduate research and applied learning.
  • Relevant industry experience.
  • Professional teaching experience in the areas of Compiler Design, Embedded Systems, Advanced Data Structures, Artificial Intelligence, Data Mining, Information Systems, Graphics and Vision, IoT/edge Computing Systems, Machine Learning, and Natural Language Processing.
