Position Highlights The successful candidate for this position conducts and supports microbiology and plant pathology laboratory research by developing protocols to address challenging research questions, designing and performing experiments, summarizing and interpreting experiment data, and submitting research reports in laboratory setting. The Schomer lab explores and discovers answers to challenging questions. We are looking for a lab coordinator who will develop, facilitate, and implement the scientific protocols needed to reach our biological research aims. This is a bacteriology lab and we seek a candidate who with knowledge and technical skills related to culturing and working with bacteria. The lab coordinator will be capable of evaluating data independently. They will develop, adapt, and build equipment, procedures, and techniques to fit specific experiment requirements. Duties will include performing necessary research and support related tasks in the laboratory. They will managing the daily laboratory maintenance and tasks, such as ordering, inventory, and maintenance.

This is an Extended Temporary Employment (ETE) position.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assists in the planning, design, set-up and disassembly of experiments. Follows detailed protocols for chemotaxis and biochemical assays, optimizes PCR and other molecular biology techniques to construct plasmids and bacterial strains to fit specific experiments, performs bacterial inoculations of plants and completes disease progress ratings.
  • Revises and implements policies, procedures, and standards to ensure the efficiency, effectiveness, and quality control of the laboratory operation and compliance with federal, state, and university regulations and standards.
  • Trains other researchers on equipment usage and answer questions regarding the experiments and the equipment being used.
  • Manages the ordering, inventory, storage, and maintenance of supplies, lab ware, and instruments essential to the operation of the lab or field research.
  • Cleaning and sterilizing of labware used for research, maintenance, and growth of bacterial cultures.
  • Record keeping, making observations, analyzing data, and interpreting experimental results. Preparation of technical reports, summaries, protocols and quantitative results.
  • Has a good understanding of bacterial physiology.
  • Excellent note-taking skills, detail-oriented.
  • Ability to perform experiments and analyze experimental data independently.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through experience required.
  • 1 year of relevant work experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience transplanting and maintaining plants in greenhouse or growth chamber (those who do not have this experience should still apply).
  • Prior experience culturing bacteria and with sterile technique.
  • Prior experience working to manipulate bacterial genomes.
  • Prior experience analyzing sequence and genomic data.
