Position Highlights

Two positions are available with this job description. The successful applicant will be involved in research objectives involving characterization of insect-transmitted plant pathogen interactions and emergent plant viral pathogens. Specific tasks will involve insect transmission/biological assays, DNA and RNA isolation from plants and insects, cDNA synthesis, primer design; PCR, RT-PCR, routine PCR-, real-time qPCR- and ddPCR- amplification assays; molecular cloning; plasmid purification, colony PCR, Sanger DNA sequencing and sequence analysis; dsRNA synthesis; other contemporary techniques.

This is an Extended Temporary Employment (ETE) position.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Pathogen-insect transmission experiments.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Familiarity with relevant literature, help design experimental workplans, lab notebook upkeep, and data collection.
  • Develop or modify standard operating procedures, implement quality control measures for experiments.
  • Analyze data; summarize results, discuss and finalize research progress reports.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and techniques of the subject discipline.
  • Knowledge of modern research methods and ability to follow protocols, data collection, and notebook/record keeping.
  • Knowledge of molecular biology techniques for working with DNA and RNA, sterile technique, primer design, molecular cloning, sequence analyses.
  • Skill and experience analyzing and evaluating data.
  • Ability to write reports and standard operating procedures
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and minimum 3 years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with general and advanced biology and molecular biology concepts, sterile technique, DNA and RNA isolation; molecular cloning/E. coli transformation, primer design and PCR/RT-PCR, ddPCR amplification; DNA sequence data analysis.
