Position Highlights The Division of Diversity and Inclusion is seeking a full-time Coordinator to join African American Student Affairs. Under the Diversity & Inclusion Division and reporting to the Director for African American Student Affairs (AASA), the Coordinator supports the University of Arizona's efforts toward building and sustaining a diverse, inclusive and culturally vibrant campus, which fosters a pluralistic learning environment and a sense of belonging for students, with a particular emphasis on African American and Black students.

The Coordinator works closely with the Director for AASA and student staff to run a robust and vibrant student center. The Coordinator guides and advises students in designing programs that create a sense of belonging and offer opportunities for personal growth and identity development. More specifically, the Coordinator reaches out to Black students, supports students who participate in AASA programs and services, and creates and implements leadership development programs. The Coordinator designs and implements programs that support and increase wellness and resilience, incorporating culturally affirming practices that acknowledge the challenges faced by Black students.

Duties & Responsibilities

About the Department of Inclusion and Multicultural Engagement:
Inclusion & Multicultural Engagement (IME) aligns with the University of Arizona's core value of a diverse and inclusive community. The role of IME is to work toward institutional transformation based on the belief that the richness of our culture is because of our diversity, that people are the source of our strength, and their different perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences make us stronger. IME works to build communities reflective of diverse cultural knowledge of the University of Arizona to create an engaged, vibrant, and inclusive campus. To these ends IME is comprised of a central office that focuses on diversity and social justice, resource development, and organizing across the cultural and resource centers that are housed within IME. These centers include African American Student Affairs (AASA), Asian Pacific American Student Affairs (APASA), Guerrero Student Center (GSC), LGBTQ+ Resource Center (LGBTQRC), Native American Student Affairs (NASA), Disability Cultural Center (DCC), and the Women & Gender Resource Center (WGRC). About African American Student Affairs (AASA):
The mission of African American Student Affairs (AASA) is to facilitate a support system that helps students achieve academic excellence and have an enriching African American cultural experience at the University of Arizona. AASA provides opportunities for students to learn more about leadership, equity and creating community.

The mission of AASA is achieved through a focus on four key areas:

*Providing personal and leadership development opportunities
*Advancing the on-going development of a culturally competent campus community
*Supporting diversity initiatives at the University of Arizona

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Center, including front and back office operations and student, staff, and faculty inquiries.
  • Recruit, hire, supervise, coach and/or support student employees, interns, volunteers and student leaders who utilize the African American Student Affairs (AASA) Center.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate all signature events, programs and trainings that integrate leadership development, intercultural competence opportunities, and coalition building (e.g. Black Baccalaureate, Annual Awards Dinner, Welcome and Open House events, Mental Health & Wellness programs, Heritage Month and Awareness Building Programs, Training Programs, and Living Learning Community Programs).

  • Oversee event publicity, manage online calendar, manage social media, and update website. Oversee creation and dissemination of the E-Newsletter that includes events and announcements from across the Tucson community.

  • Meet with leadership of the Coalition of Black Organizations (COBO) student groups on a regular basis and support as needed.

  • Serve as staff advisor for the Black Student Union (BSU) and Black Graduate and Professional Student Association (BGPSA), meet and advise executive board members for organization programs and events.

  • Provide general support, advocacy, and referrals for individual students to campus resources including IME affiliated organizations and resources that support persistence and belonging. Serve as a contact point the embedded counselor and students in crisis and manage the crisis contact information for the center.

  • Coordinate outreach efforts to raise awareness of the various programs and resources available through AASA, including outreach to new students at Orientation, Wildcat Welcome, Graduate Student Orientation, and other UA-wide student events. Represent AASA and the IME department at outreach events as needed.

  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with staff and partnering departments with the ability to understand and articulate the needs and concerns of the students served by the UA Cultural and Resource Centers from a perspective that includes intersections of gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, disability, socioeconomic class and other significant aspects of individual and cultural identity.

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in IME to meet the diverse needs of students served across all cultural and resource centers.

  • Collaborate with Diversity & Inclusion Division to provide program and engagement data for assessment and institutional reporting.

  • Additional responsibilities as assigned, commensurate with the roles and responsibilities of the Coordinator position.
  • Demonstrated success in program planning and implementation, student supervision, and advising, and assessment and evaluation for and with diverse populations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge, sensitivity and understanding of the social, political, personal and cross-cultural needs, concerns and interests of African American and Black communities.
  • Strong organizational skills, time management, and the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to give and accept feedback and work collaboratively to develop programs.
  • Effective communication skills (written, interpersonal, presentation, and listening) and ability to model and teach these skills to others.
  • Ability to foster a collegial and collaborative work environment through effective outreach and partnerships across identity groups, and administrative levels (i.e., peers, faculty, and administration).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Publisher, and Power Point), e-mail and the Internet.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree plus 3 years of experience working in higher education or related setting focused on retention.
  • Experience in developing, implementing and evaluating programs and initiatives.
  • Experience providing crisis intervention and appropriate referrals to campus and community resources.
  • Supervisory experience with the ability to oversee and direct the day-to-day work of multiple individuals (i.e., graduate assistants, interns, and/or undergraduate students).
  • Experience overseeing production of outreach materials and updating website content.
  • Experience in engendering and integrating the values of diversity, inclusion, intersectionality and teamwork across various groups.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Higher Education or related field
  • At least two years experience working directly with African American and Black populations (e.g. community organizations, educational settings, etc.).
  • Experience in advising, counseling, and crisis response in serving and supporting students from marginalized communities.
  • Experience with program development and budget management in a higher education setting.
  • Experience working with multiple identity groups.
  • Experience working in cultural centers in a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge and experience with social media.
