The purpose of this position is to explore and discover spectra properties of meteorites and minerals to understand their link to asteroids and the formation of the solar system. This work will be performed under general supervision of Dr. Vishnu Reddy.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Conduct and support laboratory research on meteorites and minerals by setting up and conducting experiments using visible-near-infrared spectroscopy in lab settings. The researcher would set up the experimental setup involving the light source, sample cup and the fiber optic feed for the spectrometer. The exact nature of the experiment varies depending on the science goal and the wavelength range of the instrument used.
  • Laboratory spectral characterization work is performed under general supervision of the faculty. The technician sets priorities for performing work and managing time to complete tasks on daily basis.
  • Applies general knowledge of the organization, job content,
    and practices to develop procedures and techniques to fit specific experiment requirements and operate visible/near-infrared spectrometers. The visible and near-infrared spectrometer will be used for spectral characterization of artificial and natural materials to understand their composition and chemistry. In addition, the spectrometer will be used to quantify non-compositional effects as well.
  • Characterize meteorites and artificial materials to develop protocols for identifying their composition. The technician is expected to conduct these measurements and write up a report that includes the analysis and interpretation of the spectral data.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Proficient python programming skills.
  • Knowledge of sample handling and preparation as related to terrestrial minerals and space materials.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent advanced learning attained through experience required.
  • 1 year of relevant work experience using visible and near-infrared spectrometers in a laboratory environment.
